TEN MILE

About Ten Mile (La Porte)

Ten Mile, in Macon County, traces its roots to the hamlet of La Porte, laid out by a settler from Indiana. The name “La Porte,” French for “the door” or “opening,” referred to the prairie gap where the village stood. While the settlement was called La Porte, the post office was named Ten Mile, after the nearby creek said to stretch ten miles in length—a name that later carried over to both the village and the township.

Though a small community, Ten Mile’s name preserves a bit of local geography and the pioneer spirit of those who settled between the prairies.
