Elmer

About Elmer

Elmer was founded in 1888 when the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway extended its tracks through northern Macon County. A post office followed in 1889, serving the community until 2011. The town later absorbed its neighboring settlement, Mercyville, in 1905, uniting the two communities.

Nestled in a Chariton River valley, Elmer covers just a quarter of a square mile, but its history is closely tied to the railroads that still pass through today on the BNSF Railway’s Marceline Subdivision.

Though small, Elmer reflects a classic Missouri railroad town—born of the tracks, shaped by consolidation, and still connected to the region’s transportation history.
