Excello
About Excello
Excello, located in southern Macon County, traces its roots to the coal mining boom and the Wabash Railroad in the late 1800s. Originally called Emerson, the town was renamed Excello in 1869 when the post office discovered that another Missouri town already had the same name.
By the 1880s, Excello had grown into a railroad station and coal mining camp, serving as a hub for transporting coal and goods to larger markets. The Kansas & Texas Coal Company even developed a nearby village, Ardmore, to support miners and their families.
Excello’s story reflects a common theme across Missouri: railroads built towns, and coal fueled their growth. Though the mines have long since closed, Excello remains a reminder of the region’s vital connection to railroads, mining, and the communities they created.
