By Car


Macon County is easy to reach by road, with U.S. Highway 63 running north–south and U.S. Highway 36 stretching east–west. We’re less than three hours from Kansas City, St. Louis, and Des Moines, and just over an hour from Columbia, making us a convenient drive from major Midwest cities.


  • From Kansas City (approximately 2.5 hours): Take I-35 North Exit to Highway 36 East in Cameron. Continue east to Macon County.
  • From St. Louis: Take I-70 West Exit to Highway 63 North in Columbia and continue to Macon County. Alternatively, from I-70, exit to Highway 61 North to Hannibal.
  • From Hannibal: take Highway 36 West to Macon County.

By Rail


Amtrak’s Southwest Chief stops daily in La Plata, in Northern Macon County. The station is about a 20-minute drive from Macon, providing a comfortable, scenic way to arrive by rail. Car rentals are not available in La Plata, so we suggest calling a taxi to arrange transport to Kirksville for car rental.
 

By Air


The nearest commercial airport is Kirksville Regional Airport (IRK), about 25 minutes from Macon. The airport offers daily service to Chicago O’Hare (ORD), connecting you to destinations nationwide.


Car Rentals


Rental cars are available via Enterprise Rent-A-Car (660-665-3396) in nearby Kirksville, giving you the flexibility to explore Macon County’s towns, countryside, and attractions at your own pace.

     

Taxi and Limousine service is available by request from the airport or train station. We recommend booking in advance to ensure availability in our rural area. 


Getting Around Locally


Life moves a little slower here - and that’s part of the charm. Downtown areas like Macon and La Plata are walkable. For a broader adventure, a car is the best way to explore our countryside, where quiet drives lead to lakes, trails, and wide-open views.
